Energising visit shows Bassetlaw leads the way in renewables
Bassetlaw is “showing the UK how it is done in the fight for greener
energy” – that’s the message from the chief of a key local environmental
group after a visit to the B&Q Manton Wind Turbine by the Bassetlaw
Local Strategic Partnership’s (BLSP) Environmental Sub-Group.
The sub group is made up of people who want to help promote green issues
in the local area through campaigning, dialogue and increasing awareness
of the subject.
Members of the group were recently treated to a tour of the B&Q Wind
Turbine at the old Manton Colliery, organised by Dave Horton, the
facility’s engineering manager.
The turbine started turning its blades for the first time earlier this
year, generating the majority of the energy that B&Q uses on site, and
saving over 5,000 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted, per year, in the
process.
The trip coincided with a new league table, released by the European
Union, which reveals that Britain languishes third from bottom in
renewable energy use throughout the continent.
Carl Cornish, Chair of the BLSP’s Environmental Sub-Group, said: “The
league table is a disappointment - if this was a football league we
would be on the brink of relegation.
“This is such a key issue as renewable energy plays an important role in
reducing CO2 emissions and also helps mitigate the impact of global
warming.
“It is not all bad though, from our tour of the B&Q Wind Turbine, the
proof is in the pudding that Bassetlaw is showing the UK how it is done
in the fight for greener energy.”

Working to protect and improve our environment
Our environment is one of our greatest assets. We live in an attractive area where there is space to relax and enjoy leisure activities. We also have many wonderful landscapes that are rich in wildlife. It’s vital that we look after our environment – which is essential for our quality of life and also to support healthy businesses and thriving tourism industry. The BLSP’s Environment Sub-Group is leading this challenge.
